Won't You Come To Him
This is the Story behind the writing of Won't You Come To Him.
The Story
This song, Won't You Come To Him, was birthed on October 30, 1995. Many times song inspiration comes at different intervals for me. A lot of these inspirations come at breakfast-time in the early morning hours between five AM and six AM. Now I know this may sound a little early for most, but I'm a early bird. And during these early times I also have my time with the Lord; reading and studying the scriptures.
It was at one of these early morning times that Won't You Come To Him came forth. I really don't remember anything exact other than having the desire to create a salvation song. Just a few words in scripture and BOOM! I was off and writing. There is however, a really cool story about the recording of this song, and God's Love Is Never Ending, both done the same day.
OK, here's the deal! I wrote one song in October and the other in November 95'. I Decided, after receiving a flier from Embassy Music, Nashville, TN, about their 2nd Annual Christian Artists & Songwriters Talent Search contest, to enter the contest. I mean, Why Not! I had just written two pretty good songs, according to me that is. Oh No! The deadline for entry was December 31, 1995! Boy the wheels in my head started turning. Hey, can't say I wasn't gun-ho at that time. So, I was gonna get some people together I knew, record them two songs and enter that contest. This was accomplished.
Let me add a note here for you rising Artists and Songwriters out there: DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY on these type contests! These people make tons of money off young inspired musicians and writers. I figure about 99.5 % of you, won't even get a smell at the real action. Save your money, spend some on your talent and writing abilities; save the rest for when you have really decided you are ready to get your music heard. THEN, get yourself an accomplished 'Music Publisher'. Let him/her take you through to the next step in your music career. Hey! Sounds like good advice! I should try that. LOL.
Alright, where was I? Oh yea! So I called up two musician friends of mine, told them what I was trying to do, and asked if they were interested in helping me with the recording of the two songs. Sure they said. Called up a vocalist that had come to our church and sang, figured she would be perfect for the task, being as she had such a strong voice. Yes was her answer. Hoo-ray! I scheduled a time we all could meet at my place and that was that. Yea right.
Saturday mid-day, I think; day of the recording in our garage. Rick the drummer and Brian the bass player (also doing the sound recording) show up with all their equipment. I already have my stuff set up. Vocalist calls and can't make it cause she is sick; and I might say here very pregnant. I told her that was fine and we would do the recording without her and add her in later when she was able. Don't forget here, I got this serious time table thing going on here.
Anyway, we are ready to play and record. I handed out a lyric sheet w/cords and played one verse and chorus of song one. We hit it a couple of times then recorded. Did the same with the next song. That's it for the music.
I think it was the following week-end (almost would have had to been) when we went to Yolanda's home to dub her in. Another complete story in its-self. I'll make it short. She was about 8 months pregnant with a cold. What an angel! She said her voice wouldn't last long, so we played the tape for song one as she read the lyrics. I really admire this woman! One take, done. Next song, the same deal.
She was a real trouper she was. Never complained, just tried to do the best she could. Never heard either of the songs until that day. Amazing! The guys too, totally amazing.
Just want to thank Rick, Brian, Yolanda, and my wife Crystal (on back-up vocals) again for being such great sports and putting up with me during this ordeal. I had a BLAST!
Thanks Y'all.
